Many familiar aquatic animals are crustaceans, these include shrimp, crabs, and lobster. There are also many smaller crustaceans familiar to most aquarists as live food, including ghost shrimp, gammarus, brine shrimp, cyclops and daphnia. Almost all crustaceans are aquatic animals breathing under water with gills. Most of the 30,000 species are marine. Many crustaceans are scavengers, plant and algae eaters. Some are predators or parasites.
Crustaceans have 2 main body parts the cephalothorax, which includes the head and thorax, often fused together, and the abdomen. Attached to the head are feelers or pinchers, jaws and mouth parts. The animals walking legs attach to the thorax, each segment having one pair.
